US Open: Ayush Shetty wins first BWF World Tour title, teenager Tanvi Sharma finishes as runner up
Ayush Shetty became the first Indian shuttler to win a BWF World Tour title, when he won men’s singles at the US Open Super 300 in Fort Worth, Texas. The 19-year-old Shetty, ranked 70th in the world, claimed his first BWF title by defeating world number 36 Takuma Obayashi of Japan, 21-11, 21-17 in just 40 minutes. Shetty’s win only adds to the strengthening value of India on the international badminton landscape. In women’s singles, teenager Tanvi Sharma placed second after losing to USA’s Beiwen Zhang, who is ranked number 17 in singles. Zhang completed the win in straight sets of 21-12, 21-11. Notably, Sharma, 16 years-old, was impressive throughout the tournament by defeating higher-ranked players. She has been singled-out for strong future potential in badminton for India. For both of these talented young men and women badminton players, their notable performances were a big milestone for young Indian shuttlers, each actively working to shape their status on international soil.
