PM Modi’s historic Ghana visit: UPI push, 4 MoUs inked, new frontiers in defence, and minerals explored
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's historic visit to Ghana is a significant event in India-Africa relations on the international stage. It is the first visit to the country by an Indian PM and, along with discussions about ways to expand defence and security cooperation and collaboration about developing mineral resources, Indian PM Modi's trip included four Memoranda of Understanding, or MoUs, to further develop cooperation between the two countries in traditional medicine, in culture, in digital payments, and in capacity building. As well, the expanded implementation of India's Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, to Ghana which supports the larger agenda of broad-based digital financial inclusion, was a key highlight of the trip. The focus of PM Modi's trip to Ghana represents how India is strategically shifting its focus towards Africa to balance China's growing footprint in the continent. The visit of PM Modi to Ghana sets the stage for a new expanded India-Ghana partnership looking to the future.
