    More about Marin Indepedent Journal newspaper : In 1948 a fusion of the Marin Journal & the San Rafael Daily Independent was established to form the Independent Journal. In 1861 as Marin County Journal, the weekly Journal, one of the oldest journals in the state, was created. The journal was released by Jerome A. Barney, Saturdays in San Rafael. In 1900 Harry Granice began the Independent as weekly Independent San Rafael, which by 1903 became a daily newspaper managed by Celeste Granice Murphy, his daughter. This paper was initially known as the Independent Journal of San Rafael. The paper was purchased by Gannett from the Brown family in 1980. The Gannett paper was purchased by MediaNews Group in 2000.
