More about Bakersfield Californian newspaper : The Californian Bakersfield is a family-owned independent journal. The first journal, The weekly Courier, first released in Havilah, California, on August 18, 1866 was the direct descendant of Kern County. Havilah was the center of the gold rush of 1864, which brought the first significant population inflow in Kern County, a tiny mining town about 50 miles north-east of the current north at the town of Bakersfield. The name of the newspaper was subsequently altered to The Weekly Courier. The newspaper went on to move the mineral wealth of the region to the sun and to the south.
