More about Cherokee County Herald newspaper: In March 1938, Joseph Malachi Shaw Sr. and his wife, Gussie Grimes Shaw, who left their Shaw's printing store in Guntersville with their 17-year old son, Joseph M. Shaw Jr., to begin new publication, formed the Cherokee County Herald. Until 1950, Joseph Sr. served as The Herald's editor. Joe Jr.'s entry was at about a half block from where his dad set up the company at the present place on 107 West First Avenue. The Cherokee Milling block, used for storage of grain, was bought by Joe Jr.
