WHO Recommendation: The WHO suggests that adults should consume less than 5 grams of salt per day. This is based on evidence that reducing salt intake lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Dietary Guidelines: In many countries, dietary guidelines recommend limiting sodium intake. In the United States, for example, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest a daily sodium intake of less than 2,300 milligrams (about 1 teaspoon of salt) for most adults. However, an even lower limit of 1,500 milligrams is recommended for certain populations, such as those with hypertension, African Americans, and middle-aged and older adults.
