Tasting salt … it’s a chemical substance, by name ‘Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)’, also known as ‘Ajinomoto’ by many. But Ajinomoto is the name of a Japanese company that produces monosodium glutamate. India is the second largest importer of monosodium glutamate in the world after the United States, mainly from China, Thailand and Germany.

Our cuisine now uses tasting salt extensively for flavour and aroma. Hotels and restaurants use it especially in biryani, fried rice, bakery products, non-veg dishes. But the U.S. International organizations like Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and Codex Alimentarius have imposed some regulations on the use of this MSG in food items. They should only be used in foods in accordance with their recommended guidelines. Similarly, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has formulated some guidelines in India. They claim that more than 50 food products, including noodles and pasta, are prohibited from using this MSG.

Experts suggest that consuming too much of these tasting salted foods can lead to many health problems.

✹ High consumption of these foods might result in headache, fatigue, chest pain, irritability, nausea, vomiting and problems like sore throat, burning hands, burning soles, muscle soreness.

✹ It’s possible to experience issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, and tingling in the hands and legs.

✹ Hormonal imbalance and nervous system deterioration can result in diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

✹ Food products are consumed more frequently because it influences the tongue’s taste buds. Obesity and several metabolic issues may result from this.

✹ According to some experts, consuming salt can restrict blood flow in the arteries and result in issues like heart disease.

Finally, it’s better to limit your intake of this salt.
