Imran Khan: Pakistan former PM jailed in state secrets case
Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were sentenced to 10 years in prison. The special court pronounced the sentence on Tuesday, January 30. The primary allegation in this case is that in the year 2022, a secret cable (cipher) was sent to the Pakistani government at Pakistan’s embassy in the US, which was revealed by the Prime Minister of that country, Imran Khan.
The verdict was pronounced under Section 5 of the Pakistan Official Secrets Act – 1923 on the charge of divulging an official secret. Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi are currently lodged in Adiala High Security Jail, Rawalpindi.
Responding to this, Imran Khan said that some prominent people from London had influenced this probe through a well-planned strategy. Imran Khan’s lawyer Naeem Panjutha responded on social media that they will not accept the verdict of the case, saying it is illegal.
It is remarkable that such a verdict comes at a time when the general elections in Pakistan are very few days away. It is reported that Imran Khan’s lawyer will appeal the verdict in the high court.
