Amla: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects and Dosage

Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is a small, green fruit that is highly valued in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its various health benefits.It has been used as traditional medicine to heal from three doshas called Kapha, Vata, Pitta from centuries in India. Consuming amla regularly is believed to contribute to overall health in several ways.

1. Rich in Vitamin C: Amla is one of the richest sources of vitamin C, which is essential for a healthy immune system. Vitamin C is known for its antioxidant properties, helping the body fight free radicals that can damage cells and contribute to various diseases.

2. Boosts Immunity: The high vitamin C content in amla helps strengthen the immune system, making the body more resistant to infections and illnesses. It plays a crucial role in the production of white blood cells and antibodies.

3. Antioxidant Properties: Amla is rich in antioxidants, including polyphenols and flavonoids. These compounds help neutralize oxidative stress and reduce inflammation, which are linked to various chronic diseases, including heart disease and cancer.

Powder : 1 Tablespoon

Juice : 20 ml

Fruits : 1 – 2 (Raw / Fermented)

Disadvantages / Side Effects

Acidity: It can trigger hyperacidity as Amla is acidic in nature due to its high contents of vitamin C. Although Amla is often used for detoxification purposes, it might trigger hyperacidity.

Allergy: Several people might be allergic to amla, causing certain health issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, redness, swelling around the mouth, breathing difficulties, migraines, etc.

Hypotension & Low sugar conditions: The patients with health conditions like Hypotension & Low sugar have to avoid Amla in their diet as It may promote more low-sugar and hypotensive situations.

Hardening stools: Amla can help relieve constipation, but if taken in excess, it can make the stool harder.

Dehydrating properties: Amla can stimulate production of urine due to its diuretic properties. It might cause dehydration in some cases. Hence it is advisable to keep your body hydrated while using Amla in your diet.

It’s important to note that while amla can be a nutritious addition to a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle involves a combination of factors, including regular exercise, a well-balanced diet, and other healthy habits.
