Ex-Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur to be awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously newspaperhunt, January 24, 2024March 30, 2024 Socialist leader Karpoori Thakur awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ New Delhi: The Indian government has announced Bharat Ratna, highest civilian award, to Karpoori Thakur, a prominent freedom fighter, national leader and late former Chief Minister of Bihar. He was born on January 24, 1924 in Samastipur, Bihar. He was a very active participant in many movements right from his student days. As a part of that, he participated in the Quit India movement in 1942 and went to jail. Later he excelled in politics. He entered the Bihar Assembly in the year 1952. Later he served as Deputy Chief Minister in 1968 and then as Chief Minister in 1970. During his tenure as Chief Minister, he formulated the ‘Karpoori Thakur Formula’ with the intention of giving preference to the backward classes in government jobs. Thus reservations were made for the backward classes. The people there call him ‘Jan Nayak’ for his great social services. Thakur died on February 17, 1988. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the Government of India for his outstanding services for the welfare of the poor and Dalits, fighting against the inequalities in the society. Speaking on this occasion, Prime Minister Modi said that his efforts towards the upliftment of the Dalit communities are inspiring. The government has announced the Bharat Ratna a day before his centenary celebrations, which is quite interesting. ‘Not easy to get back Pakistan’s economy on track’: Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif PM Narendra Modi Announces Scheme To Install Rooftop Solar In 1 Crore Homes Amazing Health Benefits of Ginger TAGS: Who is Karpoori Thakur?
