Former Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has died in a helicopter crash
Former Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, 74, has died in a helicopter crash, his office has confirmed. Pinera, who belongs to the Conservative Party, served as the country’s president for two non-consecutive terms in 2010 and again in 2018. Pinera died in the helicopter crash on Tuesday, February 6, while the four people traveling with him in the helicopter escaped with injuries.
“He was a great democrat and made the best decisions for the country,” President Gabriel Boric said, praising him for his determined leadership in rebuilding the country after the 2010 earthquake and his memorable services in rescuing 33 miners in the San Jose mine and managing the Covid pandemic.
President Boric declared three days of national mourning, and preparations for the funeral began on Friday. Many celebrities around the world have paid tributes to his death.
