Polls open in Bangladesh election guaranteed to hand Sheikh Hasina a 5th term

Bangladesh election: After a boycott organized by an opposition party she has labeled a “terrorist organization,” polls in Bangladesh open ensuring Sheikh Hasina a fifth term. Voting in Bangladesh began on Sunday at 8 a.m. and will end at 5 p.m. 

Hasina’s party has almost no effective opposition in the seats it is running, but it has avoided fielding candidates in a few others, ostensibly to avoid the assembly being labeled a one-party institution.

Hasina has presided over unprecedented economic progress in a country that was once impoverished, but her government has been accused of massive human rights violations and a merciless opposition crackdown.

The elections take place amid a backdrop of pre-election violence and fear of further bloodshed, with the country’s largest opposition, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and other like-minded parties announcing a boycott of the votes. The BNP has called a two-day nationwide strike beginning on Saturday.

Because of its concerns about the credibility of the elections, the opposition is boycotting the election and inciting people not to vote. It claims that the ruling Awami League put up “dummy” candidates as independents to make the election appear credible, something the ruling party denies.

Tensions in Bangladesh have risen since October, when a big antigovernmental march demanding Hasina’s resignation and the establishment of a caretaker administration to oversee the election turned violent. According to Hasina’s administration, there is no provision in the constitution for a caretaker government.
