Yemen’s Al-Qaeda branch leader died in unclear circumstances

The leader of the Yemeni branch of the notorious terrorist organization al-Qaeda, Khalid Al-Batarfi, has died, the terrorist group itself announced in a video. The organization released a video of the body wrapped in an al-Qaeda flag. No details have been released regarding his death. Batharfi is estimated to be around 40 years old.

He relocated from Saudi Arabia to Afghanistan in 1999, where he joined the Taliban in attacking the US Army. He joined al-Qaeda in 2010 and was instrumental in capturing Yemen’s Abyan province.

He took over as head of the group in 2020, succeeding leader Qassim Al-Rimi, who was killed in a US drone strike. But earlier America announced a reward of 40 crores on Batarfi’s head. AQAP is said to be the most dangerous group in Yemen since the death of Osama Bin Laden.

“Allah took his soul when he patiently sought his reward. He stood firm and waged jihad,” the terrorists said in the video, according to the US-based SITE intelligence group.
