About Nauru : The extraction of phosphate played an important role in the history of Nauru. The first inhabitants of the country were the Micronesians and the Polynesians. In the late 19th century, the Nauru was annexed by Germany. The phosphate extraction in the island began in the year 1906. After the First World War it became a League of Nations administered by New Zealand, Australia, and the U.K. The Nauru achieved its independence in 1968.
