More about El Watan newspaper : El watan was established in 1990 following the abandonment of Omar Belhouchet and nineteen fellow members of the FLN-owned El Moudjahid newsletter[1], which is aimed at promoting democracy and coverage for the Algerian opposition. The Algerian Government has suspended it several times and reporters and publishers imprisoned for numerous crimes. The journalists have been attacked both by state forces and by Islamist insurgents according to global media watchdogs Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
